It cannot be surpassed, with its thick, smooth, pointed leaves, Hosta 'Halcyon' remains the number one blue hosta.
Many years ago, the plantsman Eric Smith crossed a late-flowering H. sieboldiana with H. 'Tardiflora'. The offspring became a whole family of Tardiana hostas. The pinnacle of these is H. Halcyon, which has gone on to produce a large family of its own. Ruth holds the National Collection of Hostas (Halcyon and sports) here in Sticklepath, but that's another story...
Eric named a number of his Tardianas after birds: Halcyon is the genus name for the kingfisher.
