This giant hosta is one of the late Mildred Seaver's introductions. The leaves have a 'hump' in the middle, so the leaf points slightly downwards. The whole mound is also a dome, with a heavy texture. It is at its bluest in the spring, becoming greener later in the season. A fantastic opportunity to grow a wonderful hosta.

Humpbacked or Humpback? The correct name for the actual whale is Humpback, without the 'ed'. Mark Zilis, an authority on all things hosta, writes about this issue in his 2009 reference book The Hostapedia. According to Zilis, Hosta 'Humpbacked Whale' was introduced by Mildred Seaver. During the 2006 American Hosta Society Auction a piece sold for $3700 (Zilis was the auctioneer). Zilis writes "Oh yeah, the spelling of the name, as 'Humpbacked Whale', was confirmed by Charlie Seaver (Mildred's son) at the time of the auction, though it appears as 'Humpback Whale' on various websites and databases." To further confuse the issue, Charlie Seaver subsequently registered the hosta as Hosta 'Humpback Whale' in 2012. All of which is, as the young Felicity Penrose would say, "not very helpful"! But still a great plant.
